Answer the following questions.

Question 1. An old farmer is a kind person. What evidence of his kindness is found in the first two paragraphs?

Answer: An old farmer is a kind person. We find evidence of kindness in various instances in the story.

For example, the first paragraph states that the elderly couple treated the dog as if it were their own child. They fed him pieces of fish with his chopstick. They gave him boiled rice.

The second paragraph states that the old man is often silenced for the purpose of feeding birds.

Answer: Daimyo rewarded the farmer but punished his neighbor for the same act. This is because when the old farmer sprinkled the ashes on the withered cherry tree in front of the daimyo, it blossomed. This pleased the farmer with the task of welcoming him.

But, when the neighbor sprinkled ash on the tree in front of the daimyo, nothing blossomed. Instead, the same ash fell on the daimyo and its fine particles entered his and his wife’s eyes. This spoiled the entire program and upset Daimyo. That is why the neighbor was severely punished.

Question 1. Do you remember an anecdote about a greedy or jealous person and the unhappy result of his / her action? Tell the story to others in your class.

Here is one for you to read.

Seeing an old man planting a fig tree, the king asked why he was doing this. The man replied that he could live to eat the fruit, and even if he did not, his son would enjoy the fig.

“Well,” said the king, “if you live to eat the fruits of this tree, please let me know.” The man promised to do so, and sure enough, before too long, the tree grew and the fruit was boiled.

After packing some good figs in a basket, the old left for the palace to meet the king.

The king accepts the gift and orders that the old man’s basket is filled with gold.

Now, next to the old man, was a greedy old man who was jealous of his neighbor’s good luck. He also packed some figs in a basket and took them to the palace in the hope of sleeping.

Knowing the man’s intention, the king ordered him to stand in the compound and feed him a fig.

The old man returned home and told his wife a sad story. He comforted her by saying, “You should be thankful that our neighbor did not grow coconut.”
