Working with the text (Page 30-31)
When he felt the earthquake, do you think Ignesious immediately worried about a tsunami? Give reasons for your answer. Which sentence in the text tells you that the Ignesious family did not have any time to discuss and plan their course of action after the tsunami struck?
No, Ignesious didn’t think of a tsunami. He thought it was just an earthquake. So he removed the TV from the table and put it on the ground. His family did not have time to discuss and plan their action. The following sentence tells about chaos and confusion. “… her two children took hold of their mother’s father and mother’s brother’s hand, and ran in opposite directions.”
Which words in the list below describe Sanjeev, in your opinion? (Look up the dictionary for words that you are not sure of.)

How are Meghna and Almas’s stories similar?
The families of both Almas and Meghna were swept away by the waves of the tsunami and they were the only survivors of their respective families. Both swam (floated) in the sea for several days.
Meghna spent two days swimming in the sea, clutching (holding) a wooden door and brought to shore by a wave. Similarly, Almas also fell unconscious by climbing a wooden log. Later she woke up at a hospital in Kamorta and then brought to Port Blair.
Both the girls were so shocked by this incident that Meghna was found walking stunned by the sea and Almas did not want to discuss this tragic incident with anyone.
What are the different ways in which Tilly’s parents could have reacted to her behaviour? What would you have done if you were in their place?
Tilly immediately sensed the danger of a tsunami. She became hysterical. His parents did not ignore him. He was sure that something was going to go wrong. So they all left the beach and survived. If I had been in Tilly’s parent’s place, I probably wouldn’t have believed him. Maybe I scolded him for making a crap situation.
If Tilly’s award was to be shared, who do you think she should share it with — her parents or her geography teacher?
Tilly should have shared his award with his geography teacher who made him aware of what a tsunami is and its various effects. Due to this awareness, she was able to save many lives.
What are the two different ideas about why so few animals were killed in the tsunami? Which idea do you find more believable?
Very few animals were killed in the tsunami. Perhaps they feel tremors long before humans. Secondly, animals have a sixth sense. They can anticipate impending disaster and therefore flee to safer places/higher ground. The idea that animals are gifted with a sixth sense is more credible. They move quickly to overcome the crisis.
Animals have better hearing and gut sense and it is scientifically proven that Animals can sense disturbances and hear low-frequency sounds that are not within the ability of humans. Although this is an unbelievable fact, yet it is true!
Working with language (Page 31-32)
Go through Part-I carefully, and make a list of as many words as you can find that indicate movement of different kinds. (There is one word that occurs repeatedly-count how many times!). Put them into three categories.
Fast movement slow movement neither slow nor fast Can you explain why there are many words in one column and not in the others?
‘Fast movement’ has more words than the other two columns i.e. ‘slow motion’ and ‘neither slow nor fast. This indicates that tsunamis are rapid movements and it is extremely difficult for both men and animals to avert such a dire situation immediately. Although people were quick to run or climb, most people were swept away by the tsunami waves.
